About the firm
Fighting back for almost 100 years
At Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, we fight for outcomes that make a
genuine difference to peoples' lives. Maurice McCrae Blackburn
founded our firm in 1919. Almost 100 years later, our founder's
belief that the law should serve everyone, not just those who can
afford it, remains at the heart of what we do. We're now a national
law firm with offices in Brisbane and throughout Queensland. We've
remained true to our roots of standing up for workers' rights and
fighting back against unfair treatment, mass wrongs, and
injustice.
Our Queensland lawyers understand the outcome of your legal case is
important in ensuring quality of life for you and your family. Like
our clients, our lawyers come from many backgrounds and have
different experiences and expertise. They fight with tenacity, and
treat clients with sincerity, respect and compassion.
Who we represent
Queensland laws restrict what we can say about some of the areas
of law in which we practice. For a comprehensive list, go to our
practice areas.
Leading law firm
Maurice Blackburn is Australia's largest class action law firm,
with several class actions run out of our Brisbane office. We have
recovered more than $700m for groups, individuals, shareholders and
businesses that have suffered loss due to illegal corporate
behaviour. Currently we are investigating a class action for people
affected by the Queensland floods downstream of Wivenhoe Dam, and
we're fighting back against unfair fees imposed by Australian banks
including the 'big 4'.
We also have the largest superannuation and insurance claims
legal department in Australia. Our lawyers have helped people claim
millions of dollars through their superannuation policies and by
successfully challenging insurance rejections and stalled
actions.
As one of Australia's leading law firms for employees, we've acted
in many high profile employment law and industrial relations
disputes. This includes representing the Maritime Union of
Australia in its 1998 landmark docks dispute against Patrick
Stevedores.
Pro bono work
Our Social Justice Practice is at the core of what we do. In
appropriate cases of benefit to the community, Maurice Blackburn
provides free legal services. Currently we're representing a group
of Traditional Owners not adequately consulted about Australia's
first nuclear waste dump being located at Muckaty Station in the
Northern Territory, and we're fighting against the right for
companies to own the patents to human genes.
